How you can help...

You can help by:

Our two shops

Donations and gifts are always welcome to sell in our shops.  If you have anything you no longer need, please feel free to deliver it to one of our shops during opening hours or telephone us on 020 7607 5349, to arrange for your donation to be collected.

Our Animal Aid and Advice Charity Shop can be found at 48 High Road, East Finchley, London, N2 9PJ (telephone: 020 8444 6290). The shop is open every day from 10am to 4.30pm.

  • This is a general charity shop, selling clothes, books, bric-a-brac, toileteries, jewellery, records, and in fact anything, except furniture or electrical goods.

Our dedicated Animal Aid and Advice Charity Book Shop can be found at 203 Blackstock Road, Highbury, London, N5 9LL (telephone: 020 7359 0294). The shop is open every day from 10am to 6.00pm.

  • The bookshop has a wide range of classics & contemporary fiction, poetry, prose & plays, literary theory & criticism, not forgetting the veritable treasure trove of whodunits, children’s books and picture books for all ages which are in good supply.  There is also a good selection of history, biography, art, cookery, gardening & alternative lifestyle books.

Supporting our shops by visiting and donating items or gifts helps us continue our work rescuing homeless and unwanted animals. All income that is generated through our shops goes directly to caring for our animals. All of our volunteers are unpaid.

Please don't leave items on our doorstep, as in the past we have experienced them being removed other than by us.

If you would be interested, please call us on 020 8444 6290 and either speak to Sally, or leave your details for her.  She will call you back

  • Working in our charity Bookshop at 203 Blackstock Road, Highbury, London, N5 9LL. It is enjoyable and rewarding working in our shops. Training is given and no qualifications are required. A knowledge of books is nice but not obligatory and we are looking for friendly, reliable volunteers who are good communicators. Please call Susannah or Gloria on  020 7359 0294. If you leave a message they will call you back.

Fundraising

We always need help for fundraising at events and festivals we attend throughout the year where we sell donated gifts, bric-a-brac and books. These are enjoyable local events where we need help to set up or  take down the stalls and help sell items to the public.

Animal work Volunteering

Animal Field-working
We are always looking for animal fieldworkers to help. This is an incredibly important part of our work, our fieldworkers are dedicated people work directly with distressed animals or those that have been abandoned or unwanted. Some or all aspects may appeal to you. Hours vary and a car is required. Animal field-working also includes:

  • Home visits to prospective new owners. Prospective homes are given a home visit by someone within the organisation.  This is most important, to get a feel of the person/family who want to adopt, to make sure that the area and garden is safe, and to offer advice and explain what it means to take on a rescue cat.  Not all rescue cats will settle in straight away.  They may want to hide for a while, they may be very nervous of you in the beginning, so do not expect too much from your rescue cat, as you may not see it for the first few days or even two weeks.  This needs to be passed on to the new owners so that they understand what they are really taking on, as rescue cats have normally had a rough time and take time to adjust in a home environment again. Home visits also help us find the right pet for you.

  • Trapping very timid feral cats and kittens. Trapping is used when the cat appears unfriendly or very timid and  full training can be given. Big tom cats can behave like ferals but you will not know if they are until they been assessed. Mum cats and kittens are also trapped.  The mum cat is very protective of her young so she may behave in an unfriendly manner, so using the trap is much easier when dealing with her and her kittens.

  • Transport – daytime, evenings or weekends. A lot of time is spent going to the vet.  Cats that been trapped, cats that are sick and need to see the vet.  Follow-up visits after they have been neutered, 2nd vaccinations when due.  All this needs to be done by a volunteer.

If you are interested in animal field-working we would be pleased to hear from you. Please call:

Adopting an animals / Fostering an animal

  • Adopting an animal. Good homes are always needed for our stray and untwanted pets.  Our cats and kittens are rehabilitated and socialised, if needed, by our foster carers. When they are taken into care they are given a good health check by our vet. They are neutered if not already done, blood tested for FIV and FELV, fully vaccinated and treated for fleas and worms. Micro-chipping is also done giving them the best start possible for a new and happy home with the opportunity to find their way home if they ever get lost. Our rescue cats all have their own unique story. Some are timid or have been abused, others are lively kittens or cheeky juveniles and some are old. All of them have different personalities and needs. Some are happy to live with dogs, others with children and others want to be the only pet. We can help find the right pet for you and some of them can be seen on our rehoming page.

  • Fostering an animal. Fostering a cat, kitten or rabbit would give invaluable help to us as we do not have an animal shelter. All of our animals are cared for and rehabilitated, if needed, by local foster carers until a permanent home becomes available. We need both short-term and long-term foster carers. Most of our cats come off the street as strays and need time to adjust to the home environment again.  Some need medical attention to get them back into good health so we are always looking for volunteers who might have a spare room or even a corner in any room as many of our cats need to start off in pens. It is possible to foster an animal even if you have your own pets. These cats will need kind, understanding people who will not expect too much in the beginning but with the right sort of help will turn into a much loved cat again and be ready to go to their new home and be part of a family. All veterinary treatment is covered and expenses can be reimbursed;.
